You do NOT want to put water in your pp. It makes sludge with the ink, and it is a PAIN to get out!

weebee I would agree with ladyoh use alcohol. So can you give us a few more details on what went wrong with you spraying last week. Water seems to turn the ink into a white goo and its very hard to get out. But if you need help cleaning your machine let me know and I will see what I can do. Drop me a email would be the easiest way or call.

Okay. I've been researching the site for information on cleaning the PP and quite frankly am a little confused. I'm not sure if it's just different people have different methods, or if I missed something.
My question is: If Duratat ink is water-based do you still use alcohol to clean the PP & Airbrush? If so, why?

Hey G & Btats: Yes it is true that the duratat is waterbased, but alcohol is the best for cleaning up your brushes and for the pallet. The ingredent used in the duratat for longavity disolves in the alcohol or tatoff, but not in water. So clean your brushes in alcohol and use the alcohol for cleaning your lines and pallet. If you use the tatoff don't leave it in to long (1 hour) and then flush with alcohol for best results. 91% alcohol from walmart works well and cost little.

I agree, though I found out the hard way. I cleaned my PP twice with water and had a hard time with the sludge that the water created after blending with the ink. After reading posts by Tat2guy and various others I decided to try out the alcohol. Worked like a charm! Still have a bit of gunk to get out, but it worked much better.
Life doesn't get much better than someone else making a mistake and you being able to learn from it before going through the same thing yourself.

:) Thanks for the clarification. We are new to this and it is good to have a place to go like this forum to be able to learn from other people's experience.

Thanks Joe. I read and printed that post and the post you did on regular cleaning. Both explained the procedure very well.

You can talk to the department head at Walmart and order your alcohol by the case. It isn't any cheaper but you don't have to clear their shelves either. They will love you for it and like we always say...you never know where the next gig may come from.

I don't think that we're ready to order by the case. But we can use it as a goal.

Just my thoughts....
We don't have this sludge problem with the Nazille ink. And I have found that if you put it on clean skin the longevity is about the same as duratat. Also, as I have stated in other threads I am in Texas. It is freaking hot here outside in the summer, spring, fall and yes sometimes winter. So try to paint duratat ink on a hot sweaty kid. Good luck.

All the posts are saying clean the PP with alcohol and that the water makes a sludge.. yet I thought you were supposed to use distilled water if you needed to thin any of your duratat ink.. particularly the white. Is this true??
