Yesterday we set up at the MDA stride & ride event a fundrasier for the MDA.
We got there early and set up and people came over and started looking at tats. After about a hour I noticed that the event person was having trouble getting the inflatable jumper up and running. I went over and asked what's up?
She said they had no power to run the jumper. The parks dept. hadn't turned on the electricity. She didn't know what to do because most of the kids were small and this was one of the main things for the kids to do. I had my gen. and offered to piggy back her cord to my gen. Well when you tried to run both it shut down, Overload. Damn! I unplugged my compressor and tried again and it worked just fine. Air jump up and running and kids climbing all over it. But we were dead in the water without power. One of the other event persons saw what we did and asked if this little 650 gen. would work to run our equipment. I told them I thought it would be enough. Well I sprayed one tat and it quit working. Damn! At this point most people would have packed up and left. We didn't we asked if there was other things we could do to help with the event. We assisted the others with things going on and had a nice day helping out where needed.
I have been involved with the MDA since I was 14 years old answering phone during the telethon. The night before I was setting at home bored and decided to cut a new stencil for the MDA. After I cut it the boys took a look at it and thought my star's were imperfect. I told them that these kids are imperfective and that it really did fit with there lives. I showed the director of the MDA Idaho and she thought it was wonderful and asked if she could submit it to the national org. to be used as the national logo. I was pleased and humbled at the same time. I finally got my power back and did just $70.00 for the 4 hours and donated it to the MDA. Some would say that was a bummer and not worth it. But what I got out of it was. I helped a great Org. and a lot of kids and had exposure to the public. And maybe I will have a custom stencil design made into a national logo for the MDA.
I have posted the design here and will give anyone a copy of it to use for a MDA event in your area. Remember the smiles you put on these kids even for one day is worth all the gold in the world. Hopefully this will encourage you to help others in your community. Take care and god bless.
P.s. Here is also a couple of pictures of other volunteers at the event. Our own Boise State Cheerleaders and the BSU Hui-O-Aloha club girls which we tatted.
